Moral Dilemma of Blade Runner 2049

(Watch the video first)

Since the beginning of the movie replicants are seen as none other than a means of benefiting humans. They may live their own separate lives outside of their job's, but their main purpose is to help humans. Discovering who they are and what they are is considered a violation of the rules setup in the Blade Runner Universe. Although, if a replicant was able to achieve full consciousness,, the answer as to how the world would respond is left unknown and rightfully so.

Thirty years ago this seemed like a ridiculous question, but now that technology is advancing at an almost exponential rate, the odds that society will have to deal with such a problem doesn't seem so far fetched.

At what point is something considered, alive and if something is considered alive and fully conscious of itself, does it matter so long as that thing abides by the same laws that humans must abide by?
